More Teeth, Less Wires a la MX900

I’ve been working on a laptop for a while now but have been moving around more and away from the docking station. I had standardized on the Logitech MX500 mouse across all my computers. I recently decided I was too lazy to have to plug in my mouse everytime I pull my laptop out of the bag so a solution was needed.

I’m not sure what happened to BlueTooth while I wasn’t paying attention, but Logitech made an MX900 which is the same form factor as the MX500 but is Bluetoothed, but no BlueTooth mice are on the store shelves locally. Weird. RF seems to be the new hotness. I ordered an MX900 via a 3rd party vendor on Amazon last week and it finally showed up.

The MX900 has rechargeable batteries and a USB docking station with a power wart. I’m on an HP Pavilion zv5000 with built-in BlueTooth. At first I though I had to have the dock plugged in for the mouse to work, and was annoyed that I’d have to plug something else in! Turns out, if you update BlueTooth via HP, their new version will scan and detect devices so I bailed the hub.

Once the MX900 was working, I also updated the driver. So far, I can tell an accuracy difference with it. I’ll have to look into what I can tweak but it is fine for general work and coding. When it comes to Photoshopping, I may switch back to a corded mouse.

All that is left is battery life of two AA rechargeables. There’s no visible way to turn off the mouse and I’m not sure if it sleeps yet. I may end up carting around some extra batteries. Yeah, more stuff in my bag! Carrying it around is my primary source of exercise for now.
